Summary Of Recommendations For Quality Assurance Of Peripheral Blood Immunophenotyping
- Review, understand and apply universal precautions in handling peripheral blood specimens
- For specimens that can be analyzed within 6 hours use EDTA anticaogulant
- Always transport and maintain specimens at room temperature (18-22 degrees C). DO NOT REFRIGERATE.
- To prepare specimen use staining and whole blood lysis
- Be conservative, use the minimum number of antibodies needed to characterize a population of cells
- Participate in an outside proficiency testing program
- Run a daily minimal positive and negative control
- Use the forward angle versus orthogonal gating for lymphocyte population analysis
- Archive and save all histograms and analysis regions used to create reported results
- Report cluster of differentiation results as percent positive and by absolute numbers
