Summary Of Recommendations For Quality Assurance Of Peripheral Blood Immunophenotyping
  • Review, understand and apply universal precautions in handling peripheral blood specimens
  • For specimens that can be analyzed within 6 hours use EDTA anticaogulant
  • Always transport and maintain specimens at room temperature (18-22 degrees C). DO NOT REFRIGERATE.
  • To prepare specimen use staining and whole blood lysis
  • Be conservative, use the minimum number of antibodies needed to characterize a population of cells
  • Participate in an outside proficiency testing program
  • Run a daily minimal positive and negative control
  • Use the forward angle versus orthogonal gating for lymphocyte population analysis
  • Archive and save all histograms and analysis regions used to create reported results
  • Report cluster of differentiation results as percent positive and by absolute numbers
